A Symposium at the University of Nicosia on Thursday 17 January
THE NEW ROLE OF CHINA IN THE MIDDLE EAST
The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and Broader Repercussions
The prospects created by the “Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative” (BRI) will be the focus of a Symposium entitled ” The New Role of China in the Middle East” organized by the Cyprus Center for European and International Affairs in cooperation with the School of Law of the University of Nicosia and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS).
The Symposium will be held on Thursday, January 17, 2019, at the UNESCO Amphitheater of the University of Nicosia. The Dean of the Law School Professor Achilleas Emilianides, will deliver the welcoming address while the Chinese Ambassador to Cyprus Mr. Xingyuan Huang will open the Symposium. The President of the House of Representatives, Mr. Dimitris Syllouris will deliver the Keynote Speech.
Academics and other analysts will present their views on interesting issues such as the great powers’ competition in the Middle East, the importance of the “Belt and Road” initiative in relation to the historical evolution of the region, the search for a new model for Cyprus and its role in the Eastern Mediterranean, Sino-Turkish relations and security and cooperation in the wider region.
Professor Andreas Theophanous, the President of the Cyprus Center for European and International Affairs noted that “this is an initiative aiming to upgrade our cooperation with other academic institutions, in this case with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences “. He also referred to the key role of the Cyprus Center for European and International Affairs as a forum for exchange of ideas on issues of regional and international interest, as well as to the benefits that accrue to Cyprus with such events.

O ΝΕΟΣ ΡΟΛΟΣ ΤΗΣ ΚΙΝΑΣ ΣΤΗ ΜΕΣΗ ΑΝΑΤΟΛΗ
Η Πρωτοβουλία «Ζώνη και Δρόμος» και οι Ευρύτερες Προεκτάσεις
Οι προοπτικές που δημιουργεί η εμπορική και οικονομική πρωτοβουλία του Πεκίνου, «Ζώνη και Δρόμος» (“Belt and Road Initiative”) θα απασχολήσουν το ολοήμερο συμπόσιο με τίτλο «ο νέος ρόλος της Κίνας στη Μέση Ανατολή», που διοργανώνει το Κυπριακό Κέντρο Ευρωπαϊκών και Διεθνών Υποθέσεων σε συνεργασία με τη Νομική Σχολή του Πανεπιστημίου Λευκωσίας και την Ακαδημία Κοινωνικών Επιστημών της Κίνας (CASS).
Το συμπόσιο θα πραγματοποιηθεί την Πέμπτη 17 Ιανουαρίου 2019 στο Αμφιθέατρο ΟΥΝΕΣΚΟ στο Πανεπιστήμιο Λευκωσίας και οι εργασίες του θα αρχίσουν με χαιρετισμούς από τον Κοσμήτορα της Νομικής Σχολής Καθηγητή Αχιλλέα Αιμιλιανίδη και τον Πρεσβευτή της Κίνας στην Κύπρο κ. Xingyuan Huang. Θα ακολουθήσει ομιλία από τον Πρόεδρο της Βουλής κ. Δημήτρη Συλλούρη.
Θα κατατεθούν εισηγήσεις από ακαδημαϊκούς και άλλους αναλυτές για ενδιαφέροντα ζητήματα όπως ο ανταγωνισμός των Μεγάλων Δυνάμεων στη Μέση Ανατολή, η σημασία της πρωτοβουλίας «Ζώνη και Δρόμος» στην ιστορική εξέλιξη της περιοχής, η αναζήτηση νέου υποδείγματος για την Κύπρο και ο ρόλος της στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο, οι σχέσεις Κίνας-Τουρκίας και η ασφάλεια και συνεργασία στην ευρύτερη περιοχή.
Σύμφωνα με τον Πρόεδρο του Κυπριακού Κέντρου Ευρωπαϊκών και Διεθνών Υποθέσεων, Καθηγητή Ανδρέα Θεοφάνους «είναι μια πρωτοβουλία που αποσκοπεί στην αναβάθμιση της συνεργασίας μας με άλλα ακαδημαϊκά ιδρύματα, στη συγκεκριμένη περίπτωση με την Ακαδημία Κοινωνικών Επιστημών της Κίνας». Αναφέρθηκε επίσης στον ρόλο του Κέντρου ως φορέας διακίνησης και ανταλλαγής ιδεών επί θεμάτων περιφερειακού και διεθνούς ενδιαφέροντος αλλά και στα οφέλη που προκύπτουν για την Κύπρο από τέτοια συμπόσια.
